Abstract (may include machine translation)
This study presents the results of an experimental push-to-web survey (PtW) that was conducted in Hungary in 2020 linked to the European Social Survey (ESS). The main research question is whether a self-administered survey can replace face-to-face surveys if data collection is performed on the same stratified random sample and combines online and offline response options. The steps for performing PtW data collection are introduced and the effectiveness of the method in terms of response rate, timeliness, lack of itemized response, and sample composition is analysed by the authors. Wherever possible, the sample is compared with the sample of ESS round 9 conducted in Hungary in 2019 and that of the 2016 microcensus. The main finding of the study is that the PtW survey has resulted in a similar response rate compared to the personal interview surveys (around 40%), but its sample composition is different: it reinforces certain problematic dimensions, such as bias in terms of respondents’ settlement and level of education, while it is more balanced regarding age groups.
