Abstract (may include machine translation)
The illuminated codex of the Hungarian Angevin Legendary, now treasured in the Vatican Library (Vat. Lat. 8541) and partially in five other museums worldwide, belongs to the most important masterpieces of the Angevin dynasty. This article makes an attempt to attribute the codex, in the footsteps of international research, and especially for hagiographic reasons, to the court of the Hungarian Angevins in the early 14th century. A presentation and evaluation of the two anastatic editions of the codex published so far (Budapest 1973, 1975 ; and Zurich 1990) is followed by a description of the recent CD edition of the codex, prepared at the Medieval Studies Department of the Central European University in Budapest. This edition contains, in addition to photos of the 14th-century miniatures, a detailed description, an iconographic analysis and the entire text of the legends on which the representation was based. The analysis of the possibilities offered by this edition is concluded with an illustrative example, taken from the Life of Saint Louis of Anjou, bishop of Toulouse and brother of Robert, king of Naples.
