Abstract (may include machine translation)
This is a collaborative and artist-centric chapter between Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll and Maree Clarke, speaking as both artists and historians about cross-cultural experiences together. The chapter explores the extent to which political struggles for cultural recognition absorbed the historical knowledge about art practices in South Eastern Australia, thus allowing new Aboriginal possum skin cloaks, kopis, and eel traps to be made. It reflects on a practise of cross-cultural mourning through kopi workshops and different collaborations with artists and activists such as Megan Evans and Fran Edmonds. The copy, in the sense of both multiple artwork and written copy, is brought to resonate with the kopi, a skull cap made for mourning, in Maree Clarke’s work. The theme of death in particular is drawn out through examples from the exhibition Maree Clarke: Ancestral Memories at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.
