Abstract (may include machine translation)
The collapse od the Habsburg state and the establishment of the Second Polish Republic as its successor in Galicia is commonly seen through the dual and overlapping frames of state-building and anti-Jewish violence. An important, albeit some-times overlooked, element of these two overlapping issues were the Jewish militias established in the autumn of 1918 throughout Galicia. While aimed at protecting the Jewish community against pogroms, these militias may also be contextualized in the broader frame of Polish state-building.
