Abstract (may include machine translation)
The Jewish State Theater in Bucharest (Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat Bucureşti/TES) has existed since August 1948 even though the number of Yiddish speakers in Romania has constantly declined to the point that for the 2011 census only 643 people indicated this language as their mother tongue. In this article, I focus on the theater’s activities between 1970 and 1979 as they come to the fore in case file D 137 volumes 10 and 11 of the Securitate. Based on the information that the Securitate gathered about the theater during that decade, I recreate the theater’s institutional existence from the Securitate’s point of view. I recreate, thus, what literary scholar Valentina Glajar has called the „file story” hidden between the covers of the Securitate’s amassed information about this institution.
