Abstract (may include machine translation)

In two studies we examined stereotypes about Germans and Turks residing in Germany and whether these stereotypes are activated automatically. In the first study we asked German participants (n = 20) to report their knowledge of stereotypes about Turks and Germans. Although they generated the same amount of negative statements about the Turkish and German stereotype, they generated significantly less positive statements about the Turkish stereotype. In a second study we used a priming procedure to examine whether the social categories Turkish and German are activated automatically. Participants (n = 18) judged Turkish and German first names according to nationality after they had seen a consistent or inconsistent prime. Consistent primes led to shorter reaction times. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the social categories Turkish and German are activated automatically by attributes that are associated with the stereotype.
