Abstract (may include machine translation)

A theoretical analysis on shear band formation in granular media was presented. The nontrivial shape of the shear band, which was measured as the function of the cell geometry was also presented. A geometric argument, relating the position of the surface end points of the band to the bulk shape was demonstrated. The shape of the shear bands were calculated using a variational principle.
