Abstract (may include machine translation)

Using a critical and comparative perspective, this chapter discusses the treatment of refugee scholars in Hungary: the Government of which (from 2010) has been widely criticised for both its anti-refugee stance and approach towards academic freedom. Hungarian refugee policy in general, but also particularly in relation to the opportunities for refugee scholars, had become increasingly restrictive since the 2015 refugee crisis, until an apparent shift in Governmental attitude in 2022 with the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Through analyses of Governmental policies and in-depth interviews with migration experts, the chapter explores the extent to which Hungary is prepared to receive refugee scientists and academics compared with the European Union, in general, and Romania and the United Kingdom, in particular.
