Abstract (may include machine translation)

This paper investigates the role of nature-based solutions (NbS) as interconnected systems within urban landscapes to support their systematic implementation and scaling. Applying the concept of "naturescapes"—assemblages of NbS—to the city of Bogotá, the study identifies nine naturescapes, each connected by ecological functions and/or governance structures. These naturescapes comprise natural ecosystems, such as Main Ecological Structures (MES); managed ecosystems, such as Urban Forests; and constructed ecosystems, including Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). The interactions among these naturescapes transcend physical and administrative boundaries, enhancing biodiversity, ecosystem services, and urban resilience. Key factors influencing NbS implementation in Bogotá are analyzed, encompassing logistical, social, cultural, economic, and legislative dimensions. Logistical challenges underscore the importance of cross-sector collaboration, while social and cultural considerations highlight community engagement and inclusive design. Economic factors point to the need for diverse funding sources and public-private partnerships, and legislative integration underscores the role of regulatory frameworks in enabling strategic NbS deployment. This study underscores the complexity of scaling NbS within urban planning, requiring integrated governance, stakeholder collaboration, and continuous innovation. Bogotá’s approach to naturescapes offers insights for other cities aiming to develop sustainable and resilient urban environments through NbS.
