Abstract (may include machine translation)
8541 (106 fogli), mentre le restanti pagine sono state individuate in diverse biblioteche: New York, Pierpont Morgan Libr., M. 360.1-26; Sankt-Peterburg, Gosudarstvennyj Ermitazh. Biblioteka, 16930-16934; Berkley, Bancroft Libr. of the University of California, 2MS A2M2 1300.37; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Arts, 199.516 e Paris, Louvre, R.F. 29940.
The Angevin legendary is a richly illustrated manuscript produced in Bologna around 1330. Currently dismembered, it is mostly preserved in Vat. lat. 8541 (106 folios), while the remaining pages have been found in various libraries: New York, Pierpont Morgan Libr., M. 360.1-26; Sankt-Peterburg, Gosudarstvennyj Ermitazh. Biblioteka, 16930-16934; Berkley, Bancroft Libr. of the University of California, 2MS A2M2 1300.37; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Arts, 199.516 and Paris, Louvre, R.F. 29940. Recent studies have identified a further three folios in the dismembered parts that, together with a miniature in the Vatican portion, constitute the longest hagiographic cycle in the ms. with 16 scenes from the life of St. Francis (they are divided as follows: scenes 1-4 are contained in the Louvre folio, scenes 5-8 in folio 16932 in the Hermitage, scenes 9-12 on f. 91r of Vat. lat. 8541 and the last ones in the Metropolitan Museum in New York). The first eight scenes are based on Bonaventure's Leganda maior, while the second eight on Iacopo da Varagine's Legenda aurea. The author offers an iconographic study of the cycle and its particularities, proposing comparisons with other cycles of the Bolognese legendary and with the historical and artistic context of the period.
