Abstract (may include machine translation)
When hearing the words ‘segregation’, ‘integration’ and ‘assimilation’, one does not necessarily think of medieval towns, although in recent years a number of publications have addressed related questions concerning immigrants, ‘strangers’ and ‘aliens’ in late medieval and early modern towns (see Chapter 1). These concepts raise critical issues both in recent history and for our own times. However, the co-existence of diverse ethnic and religious groups has a much longer and more varied history than one should think, judging from the controversial, but mostly negative experience of the twentieth century.
