Abstract (may include machine translation)

The illiberal Hungarian government is branded as Janus-faced because it publicly promotes a different gender policy from the one it is implementing. Most recent research focuses on policy analysis or interviews. This chapter, however, is based on a values study conducted by the IDEA Institute, an independent think tank, which uses extensive survey data to investigate women's attitudes and values toward the so-called 'family-friendly' government slogans. What is the impact of overtly conservative values on gender equality, especially for conservative and far-right female voters? Is there a difference in values between Fidesz voters and other women? Is values conservatism or partisan identity characteristic of women voters on the right? What are the accepted inequalities and what are the unaccepted policies? This chapter analyzes key issues in illiberal politics such as reproduction, child-rearing, migration, security issues, welfare benefits, and family allowances. What are the key values that women would like to see asserted in public policy? This chapter not only provides unprecedented, gendered insights into values and attitudes research but also contrasts these findings with the results of previous works.
