Abstract (may include machine translation)
Peter I (the Great) was born in Moscow in 1672. He was crowned tsar jointly with his half-brother Ivan V (d. 1696) in 1682 and ruled Russia from the 1689 overthrow of the then-regent Sophia Alekseevna to his death in 1725. A contemporary of Louis XIV, Charles XII of Sweden, Leopold I, and August II the Strong, the tsar reformed the Muscovite state, society, and culture on an unprecedented scale and witnessed Russia's rise to a place as one of the major powers that emerged in the age of European absolutism.
