Abstract (may include machine translation)

The Hungarian Information Infrastructure System (IIF) for research and development is a network based system used by the Hungarian academic community and the researchers of industrial design and development institutions. Services are provided by other industrial sectors as well. The development of the system was decided on in 1986. The system is operational since February 1989. The number of end systems is gradually increasing. At present about 40 institutions are connected to the network. This figure is going to reach 150 by the middle of the next year. The following design topics are discussed in the paper: the data network, the services and the migration plans. Our ultimate goal is to provide Open Systems compatibility with the European systems for our users.
