    Abstract (may include machine translation)

This chapter aims at filling the gap between the study of the impact of Mihail Manoilescu’s theories abroad and his political activity in Romania, in order to further contextualize and thus better understand both his ideas and activity. His vigorous campaign in favour of corporatism generated a long-term political-ideological debate in Romania. Manoilescu’s ideas on corporatism were shaped by multiple external influences, ranging from the Italian corporatist schools to the authoritarian corporatist theory of the Austrian conservative thinker Othmar Spann. In addition to promoting corporatism at national level, Manoilescu organized a small-scale social experiment at his coalmines in Sorecani. Crainic acknowledged the ‘theoretical value’ of Manoilescu’s Century of Corporatism, but imputed that ‘the theoretical universalism of corporatism he proposes does not take into account certain special realities of our country’. The hybrid system of political representation incorporated some of Manoilescu’s ideas on subordinated corporatism but fell short of implementing his grand ‘integral’ and ‘pure’ corporatist scheme.
