Abstract (may include machine translation)

The article is commemorating the 170th anniversary of the birth of Vilma Hugonnai, the first female medical doctor in Hungary asking the question in what framework the absence of women in science can be discussed. The article is structured in three sections: after mapping the situation in Hungary today it explores the historical context followed by possible solutions for achieving equal representation of women in science with transforming institutions and the politics of knowledge.
