Abstract (may include machine translation)
Multilingualism is one of those gifts whose value can hardly be overstated—it is useful, emotionally enriching, personal, versatile, unique, and priceless. Many parents want to pass this gift on to their children, which is why millions of children in Germany and Austria grow up speaking two or more languages. But what exactly is a multilingual child? What’s the best way to raise multilingual children? Does multilingualism cause problems in school? What if a child refuses to learn one of the languages? Is it harmful for a child to acquire more than two—or even three—languages at the same time? And what if I can only scold my child in my native language?
