The article gives an overall perspective on recent macroeconomic policies adopted in Hungary. The author examines specific policy areas. The policy areas chosen as the most important forces behind the decisions taken are, debt management, reorientation from east to west, privatisation, the state of social security and agriculture. The author warns of the fundamental flaws in the system of statistical reporting but concludes that on the evidence available Hungary is emerging as a gradualist economic success. -C.Mailey
