Kritikai városkutatás

Sok kitűnő kötet született Budapestről és a városkutatásról általában a rendszerváltás előtt és kiváltképp azt követően. Ez a válogatás más: más idők terméke. A városkutatás soha nem volt ennyire bevallottan interdiszciplináris, mint most, és e kötet különösképp sokat merít a társadalomföldrajzból, mind a politikai gazdaságtani, mind a politikai ökológiai vonulatából, és mindezt egy határozottan kritikai alapállásból teszi. Annyiban is más, hogy interdiszciplináris jellege ellenére elméletileg egységes, a kritikai társadalomtudomány felől közelít a város problematikájához. Szakít azzal a hagyománnyal is, amely aszerint különíti el a tematikus válogatásokat, hogy a példamutató „nyugati klasszikusok” munkáiból merít-e vagy hazai szerzők helyi esettanulmányokra támaszkodó tanulmányaiból építkezik; ezzel is utal az efféle elkülönítés nehézségeire és indokolatlanságára. A társadalmilag elkötelezett, kritikai beállítottságú társadalomtudósnak épp az a legnemesebb feladata, hogy ideológiakritikát gyakoroljon és szakmai tudása alapján alternatívákat, új lehetőségeket kínáljon. A kritikai városkutatás megmutatja, hogy megfelelő elméleti beállítottságból igenis van alternatívája a kettészakadó városnak, a privatizált köztérnek, a szegregációnak és a város peremére száműzött nyomornak.

Many excellent volumes have been written on Budapest and urban studies in general before and especially after the change of regime. This selection is different: a product of a different time. Urban studies has never been as avowedly interdisciplinary as it is now, and this volume in particular draws heavily on social geography, both from the political economy and political ecology fronts, and does so from a resolutely critical standpoint. It is also different in that, despite its interdisciplinary nature, it is theoretically unified, approaching the problem of the city from the perspective of critical social science. It also breaks with the tradition of separating thematic selections according to whether they draw on the work of exemplary 'Western classics' or on local case studies by national authors, thus pointing to the difficulties and unjustifiability of such separation. The most noble task of the social scientist with a critical and socially committed attitude is to exercise ideological critique and, on the basis of his or her professional knowledge, to offer alternatives and new possibilities. Critical urban research shows that, with the right theoretical orientation, there is an alternative to the divided city, to privatised public space, to segregation and to poverty on the margins of the city.
