Abstract (may include machine translation)
Sexuality is a particularly potent site for understanding how societies are structured and how they change. Analysing the “intimate” reveals much about the “public”. Moreover, comparing the ways in which sexuality is organized across time and space allows us to see anew similarities and differences between societies usually viewed primarily as state and political entities. Through the lens of sexuality unexpected continuities and ruptures emerge and surprising moments of liberalization and retraditionalization come to light, shifting our perceptions and understandings.
