Internationalisierung im Fokus: Innenansichten aus dem deutschen Wissenschaftssystem: Debattenbeitrag

Das Wissenschaftssystem in Deutschland erlebt eine Phase rasanter Internationalisierung: Globale Vernetzung gilt als Voraussetzung, Merkmal oder Garant wissenschaftlicher Spitzenforschung. Forschung ohne internationalen Einfluss und Anschluss wirkt heute undenkbar und rückständig. Doch was genau verstehen die Akteure im System eigentlich unter Internationalisierung – studentische Mobilität und globalen Ideenaustausch, oder Wettbewerb um exzellente Forschende und Spitzenplätze in Rankings?

Mitglieder der Arbeitsgruppe Internationalisierung der liefern mit „Internationalisierung im Fokus: Innenansichten aus dem deutschen Wissenschaftssystem“ einen Einblick in den Stand der Internationalisierung in Deutschland. Der Debattenbeitrag basiert auf Fokusgruppensprächen mit diversen Akteuren des deutschen Wissenschaftssystems und wird durch Kommentare von Studierenden und Forschenden und einer wissenschaftssoziologischen und historischen Einordnung des Themas ergänzt. Er zeigt divergierende Definitionen des Internationalisierungsbegriffs und verschiedene Umsetzungskonzepte auf, beleuchtet die Arbeitsweise und Zielsetzungen der Internationalisierungsbüros in deutschen Hochschulen und diskutiert die heutigen Grenzen und Hürden der Internationalisierung.

The science system in Germany is experiencing a phase of rapid internationalisation: global networking is seen as a prerequisite, characteristic or guarantor of top scientific research. Today, research without international influence and connections seems unthinkable and backward. But what exactly do the players in the system actually mean by internationalisation - student mobility and global exchange of ideas, or competition for excellent researchers and top positions in rankings?

Members of the working group on internationalisation provide an insight into the state of internationalisation in Germany with ‘Internationalisation in Focus: Inside Views from the German Academic System’. The contribution to the debate is based on focus group discussions with various stakeholders in the German academic system and is supplemented by comments from students and researchers and a sociological and historical categorisation of the topic. It highlights divergent definitions of the concept of internationalisation and various implementation concepts, sheds light on the working methods and objectives of internationalisation offices at German universities and discusses the current limits and hurdles of internationalisation.
