Abstract (may include machine translation)
This chapter explores the nexus between social protection, migration, and (im)mobility in the context of Albanian migration. Drawing on a human rights perspective and qualitative interviews conducted with Albanian migrants between 2019 and 2020, the chapter examines how access to formal and informal social protection in both origin and destination countries shapes migration decision-making, mobility strategies, and transnational family practices. The analysis highlights the dynamic relationship between social (in)security and mobility, showing how insecurity may trigger migration while migration itself can both alleviate and reproduce new forms of insecurity. The chapter contributes to broader debates on transnationalism, welfare regimes, and human mobility in contexts of social and economic transformation.
