From ‘Generic’ to ‘Real-Existing’ Fascism: Towards a New Transnational andHistorical-Comparative Agenda in Fascism Studies

    Abstract (may include machine translation)

This essay aims at assessing the current state and prospects of comparative fascism studies, by identifying the most urgent and productive avenues of transnational research. In the first part of the essay, I detail my engagement with Roger Griffin’s work and its impact on my own approach, against the background of fascism studies, with a focus on the concepts of charisma, palingenesis, and comparative methodology. In the second part, based on an overview of the history of fascism in non-Western regions, I challenge scholars of fascism to further reflect on the comparative and transnational foundations of fascism studies and on the interdisciplinary nature of their approach, with a focus on the link between social and cultural history. In the end, I plead for a new agenda of historical-comparative studies of fascism that is critical, transnational and interdisciplinary.
