Abstract (may include machine translation)
Hungarian doctoral training lags behind in the international competition for students and faculty. Many of the research topics are not at the cutting edge, the system is fragmented both professionally and geographically, most doctoral schools lack scope and depth, the average level of training is mediocre, and internationally unattractive. Thus, it needs a radical overhaul. Using Hungarian and international data, this paper provides a brief overview of the state of doctoral education in Hungary and abroad and its recent trends, the weaknesses of our doctoral education, and the relationship between the supply and demand for such degrees. Finally, in order to move forward, some proposals are made, using the example of doctoral training in economics.
