Beyond the Grave: The Burial Sites of the Árpádian Rulers in Relation to Their Foundations of Episcopal Sees

This chapter analyses the formation of Árpádian dynastic memory through the selection of the rulers' burial sites, with particular attention to those instances when the kings were buried in a cathedral. Compared to other burial sites such as royal abbeys and friaries and the Virgin Mary provostry at Székesfehérvár as “royal necropolis,” cathedrals can be considered outliers, a solution recurred to only in 6 out of 23 cases, under extraordinary circumstances of sudden or violent death or in cases of questionable succession. This shows that cathedral cities were important power centres for Árpádian monarchs in their lifetimes, but not beyond the grave.
