Abstract (may include machine translation)
This overview is an attempt to answer the question if and how comparative economics is able to address the challenges of a global economy that has turned upside down, following technological and political earthquakes. Our main thesis is that the study of postcommunist transition and its modalities is by and large over. Instead, a new approach in terms of varieties of capitalism emerges. The latter is very unlike the long-established dichotomy between coordinated and liberal market economies of Western Europe, as it is established in the political science literature. Rather, we survey features of the three main blocs that shape the current and future global economy: the United States, China and the European Union. Our argument supports the continued validity of the comparative approach for theory and policy alike.
