A szemfényvesztő impakt faktor

Az impakt faktor eredetileg a folyóiratok befolyásának történeti analíziséhez használható eszközként jelentkezett. Azóta kilépett ebből a szerepből, egyfajta ikonná vált, és önálló életet él. Bár bizonyos óvintézkedések mellett a tudományos folyóiratok minősítésére korlátozott sikerrel alkalmazható, racionálisan teljesen indokolhatatlan kutatók vagy kutatóintézetek minősítésére használni. Ennek ellenére alig akad olyan, tudományos előmenetelhez csatolt vagy támogatási forrásra benyújtott pályázati anyag, ahol az impakt faktor és a citációs szám ne szerepelne kiemelt helyen, sokszor egyedüli minősítő adatként.

The impact factor originally emerged as a tool for historical analysis of the influence of journals. It has since stepped out of that role, becoming something of an icon, and has taken on a life of its own. Although it can be used with limited success, subject to certain caveats, to rate scientific journals, it is rationally completely unjustifiable to use it to rate researchers or research institutions. Nevertheless, there is hardly any application attached to a scientific merit or submitted for funding where impact factor and citation count are not prominently featured, often as the sole qualifying data.
