Abstract (may include machine translation)
The importance of the Saint-Frambourg chapel's carvings in Senlis is that all stages of early Gothic forms in the Ile-de-France can be observed in the church and on the facades from the seventies of the 12 th century till 1230. The typological investigation of capitals from the point of the building's periods was done by Nicole Bianchina, a further task would be the stylistic critical investigation including the ornaments of the western façade together with defining its art historical place, and the monographic publication. The earliest capitals of the chapel can be found in the apse originating from the last third of the 12 th century. The work of Bianchina mentions two major architectural periods between 1170/77-1230, and within this the first phase is around 1170. This is first the phase of the formation of early gothic floral decoration. The capital type of this is originating from Roman acanthus capitals as a version with more simple letters and bending corner lesves ending in volutes. An example is a capital of the apse of Noyon cathedral, and another one in the northern aisle of the Notre Dames of Mantes. The next phase of this development when the volute is replaced by three leaves or one smaller piece flanked by two volutes. The corner leaves are ending in a bud bending backwards decorated with leaves or a garland of fruits. The richest variations of this new capital type can be found on the columns of the ambulatory in the Notre Dame of Paris. The capitals of the apse of the Senlis chapel are representatives of this new type and the workshop active there was seemingly in the knowledge of eraly gothic decorative forms in the Ile-de-France a new interpretation of which was carved in the apse The new carving workshops replacing those working in the apse before 1177-1185 and 1185-1195 have brought radical changes in the ornamental decoration of the church. In the eastern part appeared those capitals with buds which might be called classical gothic types. In the last phase the ornaments of the western façade represent a new spirit: the rich floral decoration of deuxième flore gothique is flourishing on the walls and capitals. The more naturalistic foliage pattern of the new floral ornamentation reaching Ile-de-France in the first quarter of 13 th century is covering the archivolts of the western porch showing similarities with the decoration of the western façade of Notre Dame in Paris (Portal de la Vierge)
