The article reviews the changes in Hungarian economic management between 1973 and 1983 with a summarizing approach. It investigates that the specific features of the period of restrictions — which will last substantially longer than expected, i. e. till the end of the eighties — as well as the necessity to react on the steeply deteriorating conditions of foreign trade quickly to what an extent modified the theoretical pattern of the regulated markét by specific practical solutions. The author reviews the results and the problems of the modernizing of the system of planning and the practical experiences of the measures taken for the decentralization of the structure of the enterprises as well as the changes of the financial sphere. Unfavorable experiences in connection with the operation of the system of competitive prices should result in solutions diminuting the artificial nature of the price system. Changes in 1984 mean only a little step towards a comprehensive reform. Complex modifications alsó necessitated by the hardening conditions of international competition can only be realized in case of the wide understanding and support of the social contents of the reform.
