A magyar címer története

A címer egy ország legfontosabb jelképeinek egyike, történelmének szimbóluma. Magyarország címerének változásai is nemzeti sorsfordulókat tükröznek. »A heraldikai jelvények, a czímerek elhelyezésének váltakozásai, mindezek a látszólag csak külső mozzanatok a legszorosabb összefüggésben állanak a nagy politikai változásokkal. Nincsen olyan kis czímerrészlet, a melynek megváltozásai beható vizsgálat után ne utalna arra, a hatalmas háttérre a hol a népek életének küzdelmei játszódnak le. A háborúk és békekötések, a belső alkotmányos harczok, forradalmak, trónváltozások és uralkodó rendszerek bukásai, a világtörténelem rázkódtatásai és az állami, nemzeti törekvések, mind-mind kifejezésre jutnak a czímerekben, a melyek úgy fogják fel a társadalmi és állami élet minden rezgését, mint az érzékeny seismograph tűje. És a láthatatlan tű mindig pontosan és finoman megrajzolja az emelkedés vagy süllyedés irányait« - írja a magyar címer történetét vizsgálva egy korábbi szakíró.
A legtöbb modern állam címerének elemeit a történeti múlt és a gyakorlat szentesítette. Egy ország címerének érvényessége nemcsak törvényeken, rendeleteken múlik, hanem azon is, hogy az állampolgárok ismerik-e szimbólumait, azonosulni tudnak-e vele. A címer tehát nemcsak más államoktól különbözteti meg a országot, hanem egyedi, nemzeti, a történeti hagyományokban gyökerező, összetett jelkép.
