A középkori történelem kutatóinak néha a legapróbb részletekből kell megfejteniük az egykori élet kérdéseit. Nemcsak a minusculával vagy maiusculával lejegyzett forrásokat kell olvasniuk, hanem „ki kell betűzniük” a tárgyakon, leleteken, ábrázolásokon ránk maradt üzeneteket is.
