Pesticides continue to play a determining row in food production for the expanding world population. In turn, their residues occur in the produce and foodstuff, causing a public perception of threat and driving a need for legal regulation of food safety. During its sesqicentennial history, the Hungarian plant protection authority coherently enacted its role in legislating and enforcing legal regulations regarding registered use of pesticides. The three pillars of food safety are soil protection, control of pests damaging crop production and inspection of crop products. The effective crop protection laws regulate all three areas, and in
addition to regulating pesticide registration, use and waste management, they also specify alternative agricultural technologies in opposition to instensive pesticide usage, integrated pest management and ecological farming.
