Abstract (may include machine translation)

Pesticides continue to play a determining row in food production for the expanding
world population. In turn, their residues occur in the produce and foodstuff,
causing a public perception of threat and driving a need for legal regulation of
food safety. During its sesqicentennial history, the Hungarian plant protection
authority coherently enacted its role in legislating and enforcing legal regulations
regarding registered use of pesticides. The three pillars of food safety are soil
protection, control of pests damaging crop production and inspection of crop
products. The effective crop protection laws regulate all three areas, and in
addition to regulating pesticide registration, use and waste management, they also
specify alternative agricultural technologies in opposition to instensive pesticide
usage, integrated pest management and ecological farming.
