Most, hogy a kilencvenes években lefutott az “államtalanításról”, az állam visszaszorításának szükségességéről, a “vagy állam vagy piac” választásról folytatott nagyrészt értelmetlen vita, újra divatba jött az állam gazdasági feladatainak tanulmányozása. Az állam gazdasági feladatairól szóló írásoknak ma már csak kisebb része szűkíti le az állam feladatait a nemzetállamok feje felett született gazdaságpolitikai javaslatok gyors és kompromisszumoktól mentes bevezetésére, s viszonylag új fejleménynek tekinthető az is, hogy ismét vita kezdődött arról, mi teheti az államokat képessé újra felfedezett gazdasági feladataiknak ellátására.

Now that the largely pointless debate about "de-statalisation", the need to reduce the state, the choice between "state or market", has run its course in the 1990s, the study of the economic functions of the state is back in fashion.
