Research interests
Ulrich Meurer is Visiting Professor at CEU's Visual Studies Platform and teaches media, image theory and cultural studies in the BA program 'Culture, Politics, and Society'.
He studied Comparative and English Literature as well as Theater Studies at the University of Munich. After receiving his doctorate in American and Media/Film Studies at the University of Konstanz, he has been Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Leipzig, Associate Professor of Film Theory and History at the University of Vienna and research fellow at several academic institutions, among them the Hellenic Institute for Byzantine Studies in Venice and Princeton University.
He is the author of Topographies: Concepts of Space in Postmodern Literature and Film (in German), has edited verious books on cinema cultures and published widely on media philosophy, visual theory and film/media archeology. His current research focuses on friendship (or 'philocracy') as a political concept in US-American media cultures from 1840 to 1920 as well as on Byzantine visuality and iconography in relation to contemporary screen media.
