Research interests
Kate is a senior visiting researcher with the Democracy Institute and visiting professor in the Department of Public Policy. She researches the intersection of media, technology, and social change, with particular interest in supporting independent media, investigative journalism, and human rights. She has led EU funded projects to examine extremism and disinformation online, social media policies and practice, movements to promote communication access and digital rights, and efforts to expand community-based media. She received her PhD from Goldsmiths College, University of London and has held fellowships with the Berkman Klein Center, Harvard University, and the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania. Kate is a member of the Real Facebook Oversight Board, the editorial board of the Journal of Alternative Media and Communication, and the Community Media Forum Europe. She has appeared in or on: Boston Globe, NPR, BBC, Wired, Washington Post, Al Jazeera, New Scientist, among others.
