Description

This repository contains the supplementary materials - a qualitative annex and a replication dataset for the 2026 article  -'Borrowed Blueprints, Broken Systems: The Moderating Effect of State Capacities on the Diffusion of “Digital Authoritarianism” in Eurasia' in East European Politics.

The qualitative annex of the supplementary materials systematizes qualitative data on exposure to authoritarian diffusion and other relevant variables in the cases of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

The dataset contains variables necessary for calculating the "exposure to authoritarian diffusion" or the Authoritarian Diffusion Index. It covers an estimated number of 171 countries/territories between 2000 and 2021 (the paper uses data from 2003 onwards). The index is a manually constructed index based on trade with “authoritarian gravity centres”, participation in military alliances with autocracies, and participation in authoritarian regional integration organizations.

V2 introduces some navigation improvements in the dataset with no substantive changes. All errors and mistakes should be reported to [email protected] and [email protected]
