Aim & Background

Course DescriptionThis course introduces students to feminist digital ethnographic methods and critical visual analysis. It is structured around two interconnected modules: (1) digital analysis and (2) visual analysis. The first module equips students with methodological tools to navigate and critically engage with digital and data-rich environments, including blogs, forums, social media platforms, video games, and virtual worlds. It examines how digital technologies influence everyday life, with a particular focus on their design, material production, and sociopolitical implications. Emphasis is placed on the application of ethnographic methods within digital spaces, drawing from feminist approaches to examine power, identity, and representation. The second module focuses on critical visual analysis, offering students a range of qualitative methods to interpret and analyse the visual, broadly defined to include images, videos, digital aesthetics, and visual cultures. It encourages students to think critically about how meaning is constructed visually and how visual media participates in broader discourses of gender, race, class, and power. Throughout the course, students will engage with feminist theories and approaches to address the methodological and ethical challenges of working with digital and visual data. This is supported by case studies from contemporary research and hands-on exercises, in which students will generate and analyse their own data from digital environments and visual sources.
