https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/PHIL5814?type=COREMany contemporary philosophers draw a sharp distinction between (a) questions concerning the fundamental structure of reality which is a topic for metaphysics; and (b) questions concerning how we can gain knowledge about the world, which falls within the purview of epistemology. In this course we shall discuss some ideas of one of the last philosophers who thought that we can understand how the world fundamentally is only by investigating how we discover the truth about it. The course does not attempt to defend Hegel on all fronts, its main purpose is to understand the importance of his legacy to contemporary metaphysics by a close reading of (some of) his texts. More specifically, we shall discuss Hegel's views on reason and reality; being and becoming; abstraction and concretization; identity, difference, and contradiction; conceptual evolution and history; teleology and the logic of life.
