https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/SOCL5469?type=COREThis is a course in the history, sociology and geography of the world we live in. Its aim is to outline possibilities for a historically informed theoretical understanding of the contemporary social condition as it is premised on the discussion of modernity, capitalism, and colonialism. The class examines the structure of the modern world-colonialism and the uneven development of capitalism-and the emergence of its infrastructure-market, city, state, society, nation, empire, schools, transportation, bureaucracy, etc.-and relates them to the contemporary transformation of these institutions. A parallel is drawn between early and late modernity, the forging of the national scale and the global as well as between the emergence of the institutions of modernity and capitalism in Europe and outside it.This is a seminar with a broad intellectual agenda and diverse readings, so attendance and preparation for classes is essential. There is no prerequisite for the course, but basic knowledge of history and social theory is helpful.
