This courses traces the Soviet attempt to consolidate and expand theterritories of the tsarist empire and build the world's first socialist state.It begins with the Bolshevik revolution - a period of violent utopianism - andfollows subsequent attempts to reshape culture, society, and economy on themarch towards Communism. The course follows the major eras of Soviet historyand concludes with the ongoing war in Ukraine, which will force us to contendwith the thorny question of historical legacies. This undergraduate course provides a broad introduction toSoviet history with special emphasis on the themes of war, empire, and culture.Each week is split into two sessions: the first provides an interactive lecturethat expands upon the materials in the textbook; the second is a seminarfocusing on primary sources, including poetry, visual art, film, prose,memoirs, and music videos. Students shall complete the textbook readings beforethe lectures and the primary source materials before the discussion seminar.
