Aim & Background

Power relations are a pervasive element of human life that support social organisation. Dominant individuals including parents, teachers, and employers, constrain our behaviours, emotions, thoughts, and choices with or without good reasons. In this course we will provide an overview of psychological research that provides perspectives to explain the following questions of how individuals perceive and exert power: What is the biological and cultural basis of power relations and social dominance? Which traits characterise powerful individuals and groups? How does experiencing power affect individual cognition, emotion, and development? How can individuals change power relations?
