Aim & Background

IntroThe course introduces the students to the ethics, economics and aesthetics of perfume and examines the lives and social standing of those who produced fragrances and those who used them. It is designed to engage students in an immersive, multi-sensorial way by looking at fragrance from the perspective of cultural historians, economists, human rights activists, ingredients and bottle producers, perfumers, fragrance critics, and advertisers. The course uses a relatively light topic to lead students on a path of discovery of more difficult and complex considerations while maintaining a fun, experiential approach to learning.Course rationaleFor thousands of years fragrance played an important role in the life of individuals and communities; it was used in most cultures and contexts around the world, from scenting and purifying worship places to being employed as a tool of seduction. Today, fragrance is a multibillion-dollar industry whose olfactive imprint is found everywhere, from the cheap scented soap and the laundry detergents to expensive perfumes. The course lifts the curtain from this dream-making industry to expose its inner workings: the messages it conveys to consumers, the impact it has on our mind and our bodies, and the ways it affects our communities. Students will be challenged to research how the fragrance industry is present in their cities, who it benefits and how are the consumers, fragrance artisans and shop owners affected in the process.
