Aim & Background

Contemporary philosophical thought is permeated with concepts and ideas that originate in David Hume's and Immanuel Kant's philosophy. This course introduces students into the most significant ideas of these two eighteenth century philosophers. Our main aim shall be to discuss those of their ideas that have exercised a lasting effect on the development of Western philosophical culture. These ideas include Hume's and Kant's concept of nature and its relation to the sciences that investigate it, their conception of human mind and Reason as well as some of their views on human action, freedom and history.
