The course traces its development inphilosophy in speech act theory and deconstruction, and its introduction tofeminist and queer inquiry in the work of Judith Butler and Eve KosofskySedgwick. In the course of this itinerary, we will also trace the queerness ofperformativity to discussions of democratic citizenship and the theatricalityof femininity. We will close with readings from new materialism to see howperformativity helps reconfigure the concept of nature.
