Aim & Background

This course will examine the aims and methods of metaphysics from both a contemporary and ancient perspective. We will consider realist approaches to metaphysics as well as anti-realist ones. Topics to be addressed include grounding and fundamentality, essence, pragmatism and deflationism, feminist critiques of contemporary metaphysics, and values and metaphysics. Contemporary readings will include works by Elizabeth Barnes, Shamik Dasgupta, Kit Fine, Asya Passinsky, Jonathan Schaffer, Theodore Sider, and Amie Thomasson. Historical readings will be drawn from Heraclitus, Anaxagoras, and their predecessors, the early Atomists, and Plato and Aristotle.
