Aim & Background

Aims and objectivesThis course will explore the socio-cultural and ecological aspects of farming systems, agricultural politics, and food cultures throughout history in various regions of the world. The course covers agricultural histories, alternatives and their discontents, current debates, and food futures. We will read selections from twelve recent ethnographic books on various topics related to food, agriculture, and development. Throughout the class we will explore the relationships between food and agriculture and geographic and ecological conditions and cultivation practices; historical memories; political regimes; nutrition and diet; certification standards; national policies; and processes of globalization. This is a reading and discussion-heavy seminar, and plan accordingly. We will read 2-3 chapters of one book every week. We will organize discussion around the questions you fid most interesting to reflect upon further, that you will post on a discussion forum before class. Each student will choose one book about which to focus more on and will help lead discussion that day.
