Aim & Background

In this class we will explore thefoundational ideas and perspectives that have shaped the way we understandsociety, culture, and human behavior. You will be introduced to classical theories and thinkers as well as themodern day applications of some of their theories. The authors you will read are widelyconsidered as representing sociological "canon". So we'll start the course by discussing how a"canon" is constructed and how it changes. Throughout the course we will be examining topics like social institutions,power, and inequality, family, work, race and gender, etc. The course aims tofoster curiosity about social dynamics and prepare students to engagethoughtfully with the complexities of the social world. Course organization:Each week addresses a different topic andwill consist of 3 sessions. Session 1 will be a lecture during which Iintroduce the material.Session 2 will have two parts, in part 1you will write an in-class quiz and discuss the readings together. In part 2 we break out into groups and willhave discussions directed by questions there. You are expected to have done all thereadings for session 1. The in-class quizwill be a test of your understanding of the lecture material as well as thereadings. IMPORTANT NOTE: No laptops or phones are allowedin class (digital readers, like Kindle is OK) paper and pen. Studies show that you learn better when you takenotes in hand and pay attention without the distraction of digital media.
