Aim & Background

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of key ideas in network science from a social science perspective and to deepen students' knowledge of sociological network theories.The course will offer an exploration of sociological network theories (e.g., Social Capital Theory, Structural Holes, Approaches from Relational Sociology, Field Theory) and their applications across various domains, with a particular focus on cultural fields such as science, filmmaking, and music. Students will learn to apply methods from social network analysis, including statistical network models like exponential random graph models (ERGMs) and stochastic actor-oriented models (SAOMs). Throughout the term, students will develop an own research project. Research questions may include, but are not limited to, the spread of innovation, homophily across social categories, elite formation, or social antecedents of successful careers in cultural fields. Code will be provided in R and Python, as package availability permits.
