Aim & Background

This course will focus on so-called 'ameliorative' projects in social metaphysics, which are analyses of social phenomena undertaken with the aim of promoting social justice. In the first part of the course, we will examine ameliorative analyses of various social phenomena, including gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, and misogyny. In the second part of the course, we will turn our attention to the meta-philosophical question of how best to construe these analyses. We will consider realist interpretations as well as deflationary ones. In the third part of the course, we will study several classic texts concerning the role of values in scientific inquiry, and we will consider the relevance of these discussions to ameliorative inquiry in social metaphysics. Readings will include works by Elizabeth Anderson, Elizabeth Barnes, Robin Dembroff, Esa Díaz-León, Heather Douglas, Sally Haslanger, Helen Longino, Kate Manne, and Kevin Richardson.
